Behaviors

My dog loves to dig up the yard. What safe ways can you stop them from digging?
The instinct to dig remains strong in many canines in order to bury their toys, bones or just to dig out a cool hole to lay in on a hot day. Some do it just to burn off energy or from boredom.

EXERCISE IS KEY --  If your dog has extra energy they will put it to use. So if you're having a digging problem try exercising them regularly. Take them for walk or a play a vigorous game of fetch before you have to leave them unsupervised. If your pooch isn't already trained consider an obedience class or find a local dog agility course to play on.

OUTSIDE PLAY/DISTRACTIONS -- If your dog simply loves to play in the dirt consider providing them with a sand box or a section in the yard where they are allowed to dig. You can also place large rocks or chicken wire (and staking it down) over the area where you don't want them to dig. Another method is to sprinkle/spray the area with red pepper flakes or citronella. You can also add in a small kiddie pool for him to cool off in. If kiddie pools aren’t your thing, a small pond can be made on a budget that can match the rest of your garden decor.

TOYS HELP -- Keep a basket of toys handy in your yard. These can be toys that your dog can play with only in your yard, and in time, he’ll look forward to going out so he can play with his special toys. Keeping your dog occupied is key in preventing him from looking for trouble.

THEIR OWN SPACE -- Even if your dog lives indoors, he’ll appreciate having his very own space in the yard to relax. Build or buy him a nice and comfortable doghouse where he can retreat for some quiet time.

DESTROYING PLANTS? -- If your dog can’t seem to stay away from your yard, try planting flowers or vegetables in pots or planters. Many plants do well when planted in a pot, and they are less likely to be trampled by your dog.

What is the true purpose of a dog's bark?
A barking dog is often an alarm and its purpose is to let people as well as other dogs know that something is trying to invade its territory. In the wild, barking dogs tells puppies to take cover and hide, and alerts the other dogs in the pack to assemble for action. Dogs also bark when they are bored, anxious or excited.

Do dogs feel guilty when they do things they know will upset us? Like pee on the rug or get into the trash?
Dogs don't feel guilty when they have done something wrong. They do react to our tone of voice and body language, they quickly learn to respond to us. Dogs have no concept of cause and effect. Dogs often behave submissively when their owners are upset, in hopes of ending the conflict.

Signs of submissive behavior include lowered ears, downcast eyes, a cringing posture and a tucked tail. A canine pack leader would accept this form of apology and move on. Sometimes human owners can interpret these behaviors as a sign of guilt and think that their dog knows when they've done something wrong, but they don't. That's their way of saying sorry. So accept their apology when they make a mistake ;)

Which breed of dog has restrictions in over 500 cities, is banned in Denver, parts of Florida and grounded on most airlines and transport companies?
Pit Bulls. When they don't release their energy it leads to mischievous behavior. This muscle consumes most of its head, more than other dogs. That is why they have amazing jaw strength.

They're highly intelligent and very loving dogs. They just need an outlet for their energy through exercise. Pit bulls make outstanding pets when trained properly. Socialization is the key to people friendly dogs of all breeds. Famously a part of American film history a Pit Bull was Petey in the little rascals, the RCA dog and Buster Brown shoe dog.

Health

What foods can make your dog sick?
Small quantities of grapes and raisins can cause renal failure in dogs. Chocolate (in all forms), macadamia nuts, onions (and onion powder), or anything with caffeine can also be harmful. Fatty foods also should not be given to your pet because excessive fat can cause pancreatitis. Raw eggs can cause salmonella poisoning in dogs. Scrambled lightly is best! Alcoholic beverages, avocado, garlic, salt, yeast dough and of course spoiled foods. Mushrooms can be deadly- never let your pets chew on mushrooms found in your yard. Only safe “food” mushrooms are shitaki, maitake and reishi.

Are dog outfits really necessary?
They can be. Some dogs are bred to handle cold weather. Labrador retrievers and Newfoundland’s, for example, naturally grow out their locks in winter for added insulation. But smaller, short-haired dogs are ill-equipped for cold conditions. A snug-fitting sweater would make a Greyhound or Chihuahua more comfortable in cold weather.

Can dogs get sunburned?
Dogs absolutely CAN get sunburned just like we can. There are certain areas on animals that are most sensitive to the sun. Especially hairless dogs are more prone to burning and you should apply sunblock to their skin if you're going to be out in the sun for a long period of time.

Even dogs that have light colored noses can get sunburns. Be sure not to use a human sunscreen if you think your pet may lick it since some ingredients, like zinc oxide which is contained in human ointments, can be toxic. Licking zinc oxide can cause nausea, diarrhea and even anemia. Sunscreens made specifically for pets do not contain zinc oxide and are safe.
